GWI Network Happy Hour

You are invited to a GWI Happy Hour at the Greenhouse! At our first social event since the pandemic, we’ll be meetin’, mixin’ and minglin’ with other GWI Network members over beverages and noshes.

Come hang with those folks you might have only seen online this past year. Our connectedness to each other is what makes all of our Good Work stronger, so we would love to see you there!

Out of respect for various needs and comfort levels, no masks outdoors + masks indoors when not eating or drinking are required.

About this event

It has been documented time and time again that straight, cis-gendered men harass lesbians who don’t subscribe to traditional stereotypes of gender. What threat does androgyny pose to the patriarchy and what are the benefits of being a woman free from the male gaze? Julie Novak explores these questions in an excerpt from her one person show, America’s Next Top.

There is a difference between creating spaces – whether inside ourselves or in the world – that are “welcome to all” versus “intended for you.” In the former people can come in without assurance of being included. The latter puts attention into creating spaces that take into account the perspectives and needs of the array of human identities too often relegated to the margins, whether Latinx, Black or other people of color; LGBTQ+; people with accessibility needs; immigrants; elders; etc.

This workshop will braid strands of mindfulness; stories from personal experience and the media, and; and reflections prompted by these stories and by your own experiences. This weave of considering the universal aspects of narrative, focusing our attention in the present moment, and tuning into our thoughts and questions, will spur our exploration and dialogue of what is; what it could mean to create spaces intended for all of us; and what it would mean for our own Good Work to commit to taking action to get there.

This workshop is one in a series featuring story curators and tellers from different marginalized groups sharing their personal stories in order to provoke listeners to ask “what changes can I make within my heart, life, communities and organizations to truly make the spaces created intended for all?”

Just Transition Primer

Let’s come together online to align understanding and action in support of effective, collective responses to the moment we are living in.

A global pandemic has altered the fabric of our daily lives with so many threads of uncertainty woven in. A strong uprising and awakening to the necessity of overcoming racial injustice has been initiated and needs to be sustained. These – and other – realities of our current context only heighten the importance of connecting to explore a shared vision of Just Transition. What will it take to build systems centered on care for each other and our shared home? This core GWI workshop helps us align our focus on this in the Mahicantuck (Hudson) Valley. Join us online, in community, to deepen your understanding of the Just Transition framework and principles. Through video, reflection, story sharing, and small group discussion, you will:

  • See people from across the country describing aspects of Just Transition
  • Hear how other participants respond to the framework
  • Connect your own experience to extractive and regenerative economic paradigms
  • Gain a sense of the framework and principles, and where they come from
  • Discuss how you are drawn toward weaving one or more Just Transition principles into your Good Work

Shared Leadership and Democracy in the Workplace (3 of 3)

Join GWI as we explore the tools, policies, and culture of shared leadership and democratic decision making.

About this event

In 2019, the GWI team made the collective decision to move from a hierarchical organization to a Worker Self Directed Nonprofit. Together, we built a system of shared governance and leadership that serves the needs of our organization while honoring our unique talents as individuals.

In this three part series, we will get into the nuts and bolts of how to implement democratic decision making, and discuss broader relational shifts that facilitate a culture of shared leadership. Throughout the series, we will explore the broader context of shared leadership applicable to different types of organizations, both for- and non-profit, as well use GWI’s transition as a case study to explore how we can bring democratic values into the way we work and build deeper connections to our impact, purpose, and each other. Rather than provide a specific template approach, this series is designed to support participating organizations to see opportunities to evolve their own structure and processes. Together, we will explore:

Day 1 – July 7th: Tools for a Democratic Workplace

Day 2 – July 9th: Policies & Practices of Democratic Decision Making and Shared Leadership

Day 3 – July 13th: Building a Culture of Shared Leadership

We request that participating organizations send a minimum of two workers, and that participants attend all three workshops. Shared leadership is a collaborative practice, and we believe that the more workers present, the easier it will be for an organization to engage with this work. Our recommended best practice is to send a delegation of workers that represent different professional backgrounds and different levels of authority within the organization.

About this event

One in a series of explorations of motivation and means to attend to social equity in the spaces we create in our work and lives

Transgender people are facing more and more discrimination including bans on gender-affirming treatments and procedures that can be essential to their physical and emotional well-being. Raine Grayson shares his story of experiencing horrific transphobia in the medical establishment, and how it almost killed him.

There is a difference between creating spaces – whether inside ourselves or in the world – that are “welcome to all” versus “intended for you.” In the former people can come in without assurance of being included. About this Event

Over the course of the weekend, you will be invited to grapple with power, privilege and difference, develop a social equity practice you can integrate into your Good Work, and emerge with a clear framework to facilitate individual and organizational awareness of changes needed, ways to work toward change, and next steps to take. The workshop draws on a framework that has been offered to two cohorts of GWI Fellows and thousands of others over the past 20 years and honed by a dedicated team of facilitators, including the two who will guide the weekend. The experiences each of us brings to this workshop will be honored as we are invited to share our wisdom and gain from the wisdom of others — wherever we are on our lifelong learning journey towards achieving social equity.

Through readings before the workshop, and presentations, story sharing, discussions, exercises, and videos during the workshop, you will:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of social equity through a personal identity lens
  • Integrate a framework and common language for addressing issues of power, privilege, and difference
  • Examine how institutional and individual practices maintain inequities among people and prevent us from achieving our full potential
  • Build a community of learners committed to identifying and implementing practical strategies for creating collective change

Racial Sensitivity, Equity & Inclusion Reading Circle: THICK: And Other Essays by Tressie McMillan Cottom

A collaborative offering from Good Work Fellow Dara Lurie & GWI, the Racial Sensitivity, Equity & Inclusion Reading Circle will read works of current and past Black authors, in fiction and non-fiction, that allow us to see beyond the ‘white gaze’, a set of omnipresent, yet invisible, cultural beliefs, norms, and assumptions, that have for generations defined what it means to be American while excluding and other-ing persons of native and African descent.

We welcome you to join us for the first gathering of this Reading Circle!

The Book: Our first reading will be Thick: And Other Essays by Tressie McMillan Cottom.

The Author: Tressie McMillan Cottom is an assistant professor of sociology at Virginia Commonwealth University. She is author of Lower Ed; The Troubling Rise of For Profit Colleges in the New Economy and co-hosts the on-point, podcast, Hear to Slay, with author, Roxanne Gay.

The Discussion: Participants are welcome to read the entire book but are requested to focus closely on one (or two) two essays to allow their thoughts, questions and reactions to percolate to the surface for our conversation. Please share questions, links and discussion topics with the host at least 24 hours prior to the meet-up. You will be given instructions for doing this after you have registered for the event.

Online Workshop – Spaces Intended for Us: Social Equity Stemming from Stories

About this Event

GWI is focused on Just Transition (JT) in the Hudson Valley. Mindfulness is a tool of JT. Driving Racial Justice and Social Equity is one of the core principles of JT. This workshop will braid strands of mindfulness; particular media, fiction and personal stories of African American experiences; and reflections prompted by these stories and by questions on your own experience and practices. This weave of considering the universal aspects of narrative, focusing our attention in the present moment, and tuning into our thoughts and questions, will spur our exploration and dialogue of what is, what it could mean to create spaces intended for all of us, and what we are doing to get there, and will allow us to examine implications for our own good work.

Course Correction Learning Group

In conjunction with a multi-week course from Movement Generation, this Learning Group will explore Just Transition in our region.

About this Event

This online Learning Group will convene for 5 sessions: May 26 , June 9 & 23, and July 7 & 21. While not required, we strongly recommend that you participate in all sessions.

Movement Generation has been an ongoing source of inspiration and support to Good Work Institute (GWI ) as we seek to advance Just Transition in our region. Recognizing that the COVID-19 crisis is a time of possibility to act collectively to make the ecological and economic shifts we need, Movement Generation has created a four-session online course series that helps reframe the crisis.

GWI is amplifying this opportunity to discuss real solutions and strategies that address structural inequities by participating in the course AND convening four learning group discussions in between sessions to get us organized and aligned in our region – join us!

Radical Mindfulness

Interested in the practice of mindfulness as a path to social change? Willing to take a look at your own capacity for change and peace?

“We say we want peace in the world, yet we’re not peaceful ourselves.” -Shri Shiva Rudra Balayogi.

Join us for a workshop on Just Transition as a practice of mindfulness. In order to dismantle the systems of oppression that exist in the world we must face the systems of oppression that live within us. This requires heartfulness, mindfulness, and the cultivation of internal peace.

GWI is focused on Just Transition (JT) in the Hudson Valley. Mindfulness is a tool of JT. In order to achieve Just Transition we need to start with ourselves. This requires mindfulness – paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, without judgement. We will explore what this means, how it shows up in ourselves, and how others are weaving mindfulness into their work of changing the world. And most importantly we will practice.
