Solidarity Leaders Lab

What skills do solidarity leaders need to effectively build trust and move towards action in mission-led initiatives and organizations? Who do we need to be and what do we need to cultivate?

The Solidarity Leaders Lab, a 12-week leadership development fellowship, is an intentionally-designed journey to equip, inspire, and connect the people who are already taking steps to build the future we need.

This program is an opportunity to take intentional time away from day-to-day challenges to be in community with others who are working towards just futures and regenerative practices. We have three goals: to build relationships that bolster our access to mutual support, to learn and refresh practices that help move us collectively towards durable and positive change, and to renew our energies in an environment crafted to open our hearts and light up our vitality.

Our first Solidarity Leaders Lab cohort ran April 3 – June 17, 2026. We have not yet announced the dates for our next cohort. You can sign-up to receive news on future programs through our mailing list.

I can’t even begin to describe what I have gained from this experience. I came into the Solidarity Leaders Lab with a foundation for my work and beliefs, and everything we’ve done, every person I’ve interacted with, has deepened my thinking, my convictions, and my commitment to this work. The synchronicity of emergence, care, and connections has been profound.

In this lab I have practiced and experienced success in myself and therefore, have been able to witness a deepened sense of self-trust. The presentations in this lab have given me new language with which to work and share with others, new perspectives through which to see possibility and growth, and a network of connection from which I can draw empowerment and support

The Solidarity Leadership Lab has been transformative for me, both a catalyst and container for the season of growth I’m experiencing. I never thought I could feel so safe among a group of more than 20 people, that it would feel so easy, so natural to share our rage, to dream of a shared future, to laugh so hard my stomach hurt. I learned concrete tools like approaches to decision-making, strategies for navigating conflict, co-op frameworks, and I also experienced ritual, connection, creativity, empathy, and play. Thank you for this gift – I feel so supported and this is just what I needed to affirm I am on the right path, and I’m not alone in it.

About the Fellowship

Defining and Practicing Leadership

Often, leadership is defined narrowly to mean the person at the top of the organization, or the community initiative, or the family. But we subscribe to the idea that leadership is actually a way of approaching your Good Work in partnership with the people around you, to move towards a shared purpose while fostering durable relationships and strong collaboration. Leadership is about how you activate and inspire other people: sharing the load, creating vital authentic relationships, and inviting participation, accountability, and commitment. It is an ongoing practice.

“Practicing leadership – enabling others to achieve purpose in the face of uncertainty – requires engaging the heart, the head, and the hands: motivation, strategy, and action.”

In the Solidarity Leaders Lab, we anchor our exploration of what the world needs from leaders today with the following:

  • CLARITY OF PURPOSE: The ability to clearly discern and name the purpose of our shared work
  • GROUNDED IN COMPASSION: The wisdom to move from a place of groundedness, compassion, and patience despite the urgency of the challenges we face
  • COLLABORATIVE: The commitment to facilitate durable change by creating vitalizing and equitable conditions for others to move towards shared purpose

Through interactive sessions, we reflect on our work through a systemic lens, learn and practice the skills essential to solidarity leaders, build trust with each other, and practice joy!

Topics included:

  • Sharing Power and Decision-Making
  • Participatory Facilitation and Organizing
  • Cooperative Principles in Practice
  • Just Transition and the Solidarity Economy

Solidarity Leaders Lab - 2026 Fellows

In 2026, for three months, 21 fellows gathered for the first Solidarity Leaders Lab.

We are deeply grateful for the fellows’ trust, whole-hearted participation, zesty energy, and generosity. We are already seeing the ongoing ripple effects as they continue to provide mutual support and joyful connection, deepening the work we embarked on together.

In order to tip our western culture into solidarity it is essential to deeply understand relational wisdom and to cultivate relation practices. The Solidarity Leadership Lab was a powerful container of relationship building – that moved beyond awkward ice-breakers and into the spirited space between us with grace and courage. Choosing relationship is a radical act in a mechanical, competitive world hyperventilating in overwhelm.

It has been a great privilege to co-inhabit and co-create a space where people who mostly didn’t know each other previously, had a chance to get to know one another at a deeper level than normal: to share vulnerabilities; to gather in ritual; to breathe in movement and laughter; and to co-exist with the skilled alchemy, presence, and instruction of Micah, Hélène, Aja and Mitzy. Each of these GWI facilitators offered a special gift to our space. And so we grew into a more cohesive group. We will understand the healing and regenerative effects as individuals, in time.

SLL has helped me to distill my personal mission and how I want to move through the world and do the work that I do. Simultaneously, it has connected me to some of the loveliest badass comrades that I could have on this shared journey.

Hi, I'm Chelsea, and I was part of the inaugural cohort of the Good Work Institute's Solidarity Leaders Lab. When Micah welcomed our cohort at our first in-person gathering, he said, "If you're here, you were meant to be here."  I’ll come back to this...

Program Details

Who is this fellowship program for?

This program is for leaders at all stages and across sectors. There are many ways to work towards a just and regenerative future. Whether you are coming with decades of solidarity economy expertise or just starting the journey leading social change work, we invite you to join us.

We aim to gather a diverse group of 16-22 leaders who are open to the concept that we are stronger together, and who are eager to connect and learn across arenas of experience. This program is primarily offered in-person and one of its benefits is the relationships you build with each other, therefore it is ideal for folks who live in the region. We may accept people from outside the region as long as they can commit to attending all sessions in-person.

Eligibility

If you are aligned with Just Transition, have been called to work towards positive, collective change, and want to spend time in reflection with allies, practicing skills, and clarifying your purpose, this program is for you.

  • You are committed to Just Transition in action. You might be a community activist, a leader in an organization, or a working member of a collaborative project or business.
  • You are based in or near the Mahikantuck Valley/Hudson Valley of New York, and can participate in-person in this program.
  • You are able to fully commit to the program dates.
  • You are eager to connect with other change-agents to strengthen your work and contribute to a network of mutual support.
  • PREREQUISITE: You must have taken our one-day workshop The Art of Facilitation. We will be offering this workshop in fall 2026, and again before the fellowship start date.

This fellowship program was created and offered by GWI’s programming team who have decades of combined experience in facilitation, program design, and transformative experiences. Drawing from their individual styles and backgrounds, as well as GWI’s extensive toolbox honed over six fellowship programs, scores of workshops, facilitation engagements, and cohort-based programming, the facilitators for this program are collaborating to design and provide this holistic cohort experience.

The 2026 cohort was co-led by Hélène and Micah, with support from Aja and Mitzy.

Testimonials

Through community, connection, deep reflection, and learning based in practices for building mutuality, the Solidarity Leadership Lab has enriched my life and my work.

I have felt supported by fellow explorers who are committed to ongoing learning and serving their community. SLL created a safe place for us to explore, to make mistakes, to connect. I’ve made friends and established relationships with colleagues who I will turn to in the future for support. I’ve learned different styles of working in organizations and ways to process and resolve conflict.

The Solidarity Leadership lab has instilled confidence in my plight. I leave more certain that I am working towards a positive ethic that can support our collective evolution in a way that I would be satisfied with.

The SLL cohort has been very important for me, both personally and professionally. The various ways of focussing on horizontal decision making, rules of engagement for working together and the broad perspective of participants all made this happen.

The Solidarity Leaders Lab was a deeply nourishing and transformative experience for me both personally and professionally. On the personal side of things, the SLL was a catalyst for crystalizing my values and making tangible the possibility of creating a more just and equal world by giving deep thought and practice as to how I interact with it. It was profoundly joyous and energizing to be community with my inspiring and world-changing cohort and each session I walked away with a feeling of gratitude and possibility. I entered the SLL at a time when I was feeling fairly downtrodden and hopeless professionally and through this lab gained tools, hope, and energy to reshape how I work with others and in the world. I know that this experience has forever shaped my understanding of what it is to lead.

SLL has made me more aware of my own and others’ inherent decency, desire for connection, and ability to build a better, more just and sustainable world. It’s also connected me to a fantastic group of people that I would not have known otherwise.

The Solidarity Leadership Lab has been a welcome and much-needed reminder of the kindness, intentionality, thoughtfulness, and generosity of our beloved Hudson Valley community. I have met over twenty individuals previously unknown to me who I now consider a living resource and support system when making professional decisions and navigating conflict or uncertainty in my personal life. I look forward to continuing to integrate workshop learnings about cooperative governance, facilitation, and conflict resilience into my leadership style, and to sharing these learnings with my colleagues and collaborators. More than anything else, I am grateful to GWI for cultivating this cohort, and giving us a space in which to breathe, explore, laugh, move, and ground deeper.

The Solidarity Leaders Lab has been an incredibly reinvigorating experience for me. At this phase of my professional career and my personal life, I was looking for a program that could introduce me to new ways of thinking about my core value system, community engagement, communication, fostering constructive dialogue, navigating conflict, and creating safe spaces. In the lab, I’ve been able to build a new relationship with myself as a student and active listener, learning new ways of organization building and structure, empathy, engagement, and curiosity. Through the retreat, workshops, and group exercises, as well as the Communities of Practice, I’ve found numerous ways to integrate what I’ve learned into my career, tools that I can immediately bring back to my organization, and ways to share what I’ve learned with my community. I felt incredibly inspired by each member of the cohort– everyone brought a diverse array of professional and personal experiences.

This lab appeared at a time when I needed it most: a next step shown to me while I was in a deep fog. A deep fog created by a society that divides us into “others,” tells us to be fearful of said “others,” and tells us to eliminate that threat, the “other,” in order to be safe ourselves. This lab reminded me how we may all have vastly different strategies, yet we have the same basic needs, and none of them are actually to destroy “others.” Being in community, sharing our vulnerabilities, dreams and hopes, sharing in beauty. A space was created to go within, to look deeply into myself, and to revel in what is there. This lab facilitated my re-emergence. I am extremely grateful.

I have met the most incredible people in this SLL (including Micah, Helene, Mitzy and Aja). It has been a precious gift that I would never have accessed otherwise. And the beautiful retreat.

While the trainings, teachings, and workshops were wonderful in and of themselves, the cohort, the ways community was visibly created among us, as a living practice was a beautiful and welcome surprise. The relational learnings were multi-directional, deeply situated, warm, and real. These are the intangible and emergent things that good facilitation can make space for. This living proof of the principles shared was a learning from the experience that I also got to live and to witness.
