The Book: Inspired by Octavia Butler’s explorations of our human relationship to change, Emergent Strategy is radical self-help, society-help, and planet-help designed to shape the futures we want to live. Change is constant. The world is in a continual state of flux. It is a stream of ever-mutating, emergent patterns. Rather than steel ourselves against such change, this book invites us to feel, map, assess, and learn from the swirling patterns around us in order to better understand and influence them as they happen. This is a resolutely materialist “spirituality” based equally on science and science fiction, a visionary incantation to transform that which ultimately transforms us.
The Author: adrienne maree brown is the author of Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good and co-editor of Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction from Social Justice Movements. She is also a social justice facilitator, healer, doula, and pleasure activist living in Detroit.
The Discussion: We’ll share what we found interesting and useful from the book and discuss if and how we might apply the ideas in our own lives. Please share your questions, links and discussion topics with the host at least 24 hours prior to the meet-up. You will be given instructions for doing this after you have registered for the event.
Book club host: Good Work Fellow Lisa Hall is a full-time middle school teacher and local meat shop owner.
