Vi lobos cazando carib\u00faes. Todos utilizaban los mismos caminos, la nieve compactada por todas las pezu\u00f1as, paredes de nieve a ambos lados, acorralados. Los lobos cazaban en manada y se dispersaban. Mientras los carib\u00faes corr\u00edan para escapar y proteger a los m\u00e1s vulnerables, los lobos ten\u00edan que elegir qu\u00e9 caminos de nieve seguir, con la cabeza gacha, los sentidos agudizados y concentrados. Los caminos se bifurcaban una y otra vez. El lobo l\u00edder sub\u00eda la colina con fuerza, sin descanso, pero tom\u00f3 un giro equivocado. Tuvieron que abandonar la caza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hace poco le\u00ed una novela sobre una mujer obsesionada con los lobos, una investigadora que estaba dispuesta a soportar vivir en la nieve para poder observarlos con sus binoculares. Conoc\u00eda \u00edntimamente la personalidad de cada lobo, y as\u00ed yo tambi\u00e9n llegu\u00e9 a conocerlos. Intentaba protegerlos de los granjeros, que prefer\u00edan matarlos nada m\u00e1s verlos. La reintroducci\u00f3n de depredadores en las tierras altas de Escocia no estaba yendo bien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En mi mente, la mirada del lobo es firme y penetrante. El lobo se mueve con facilidad, como el agua. Es decidido, leal, eficiente y est\u00e1 empe\u00f1ado en encontrar su pr\u00f3xima comida. Como grupo, la manada est\u00e1 organizada, es jer\u00e1rquica, solidaria y proporciona un refugio seguro para que los lobos j\u00f3venes jueguen como cachorros y aprendan a cazar. Los admiro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Los seres humanos, al igual que los lobos, tienen los ojos muy juntos y miran hacia adelante. Esto nos proporciona la ventaja evolutiva de los ojos de los depredadores, lo que significa que tenemos una excelente percepci\u00f3n de la profundidad, pero una visi\u00f3n perif\u00e9rica limitada. Los animales presa suelen tener los ojos a los lados de la cabeza. Esto les proporciona la ventaja de poder tener una visi\u00f3n panor\u00e1mica del mundo, para detectar a los depredadores desde casi cualquier direcci\u00f3n mientras se desplazan y se alimentan. Aunque sin duda evolucionamos para evitar ser devorados, dedicamos m\u00e1s tiempo a descubrir c\u00f3mo cazar en manada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Una de mis canciones favoritas es \u00abThe Hunter\u00bb, de Bj\u00f6rk. Nac\u00ed en el a\u00f1o del Tigre. Soy Sagitario. Eso supone mucha energ\u00eda de cazador. Pero \u00faltimamente mis pensamientos han estado dominados por la idea de la visi\u00f3n perif\u00e9rica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Observo, con mis ojos de cazador, que anhelo dedicar m\u00e1s tiempo a ampliar mi mirada. \u00daltimamente, nuestra visi\u00f3n estrecha se ha visto bombardeada por noticias, crisis e indignaci\u00f3n. Eso pasa factura. Quiz\u00e1s fue cuando escuch\u00e9 Ezra Klein en conversaci\u00f3n con Yuval Levin<\/a> Hace un par de semanas empec\u00e9 a preguntarme. Dec\u00edan que este presidente no ha logrado gran cosa, si nos fijamos en los resultados reales de este primer a\u00f1o. Tenemos la impresi\u00f3n de que nos lanzan cosas constantemente, esa es la sensaci\u00f3n. Pero ellos planteaban que, si tomamos distancia y observamos los cambios duraderos, no vemos el mismo nivel de da\u00f1o sist\u00e9mico que podr\u00edamos imaginar. Eso me hizo pensar en las ventajas de los objetivos gran angulares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfY si cultiv\u00e1ramos nuestra visi\u00f3n perif\u00e9rica? No estamos hechos para ello. Nuestra cultura celebra lo contrario: ganancias a corto plazo, hiperconcentraci\u00f3n, seguir adelante sin mirar atr\u00e1s, conocimientos profundos en lugar de amplios, una econom\u00eda basada en competir por nuestra limitada atenci\u00f3n, y la lista contin\u00faa. Pero, \u00bfy si el camino a seguir, el camino hacia el tipo de visi\u00f3n que necesitamos en estos tiempos, fuera en realidad la capacidad de tener muchas cosas en mente a la vez, algunas de ellas obviamente relacionadas, otras no? Imaginemos que abri\u00e9ramos nuestra visi\u00f3n para poder abarcar un panorama m\u00e1s amplio, uno que pudiera incluir factores adicionales que a\u00fan no podemos tener en cuenta, las corrientes m\u00e1s sutiles que solo podemos percibir al reducir la velocidad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

El shinrin yoku, la pr\u00e1ctica japonesa de los ba\u00f1os de bosque, se describe como una pr\u00e1ctica terap\u00e9utica que consiste en pasear por el bosque, abriendo todos los sentidos a los sonidos, olores, im\u00e1genes y experiencias de la vida que rodea al caminante. Reduce la presi\u00f3n arterial y el estr\u00e9s. Ofrece un descanso del constante procesamiento visual que realizamos a trav\u00e9s de nuestras pantallas, ingiriendo y descartando r\u00e1pidamente peque\u00f1os fragmentos de informaci\u00f3n y entretenimiento. Me imagino que, cuando no est\u00e1 cazando, mi loba tambi\u00e9n puede caminar en silencio, sin prisas, por el bosque, refresc\u00e1ndose y dejando que su mirada se pierda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo podemos fortalecer nuestra capacidad para suavizar la mirada, abrir nuestra perspectiva y abarcar el todo, y no solo las peque\u00f1as partes m\u00e1s deslumbrantes o indignantes? En tiempos de oscuridad, y cuando sea seguro, \u00bfc\u00f3mo podemos apagar nuestros fuegos para poder respirar profundamente y ver un cielo a\u00fan lleno de estrellas? Necesitaremos una visi\u00f3n m\u00e1s amplia para salir adelante. Eso requiere una pr\u00e1ctica consciente. Dejar que todos nuestros sentidos absorban todo nuestro entorno, para no rehuir la complejidad, no exigir una comprensi\u00f3n inmediata, sino cultivar juntos una escucha m\u00e1s profunda.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
